T he best time to cross the gorge is in spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and nature is at its peak of beauty. In spring, the flowers bloom and the landscape is full of colour, while in autumn the temperatures are more pleasant and the trails are less crowded. In summer, although the route is doable, it is recommended to start early in the morning to avoid the intense heat.
The gorge is about 7.5 km long and offers an impressive route through lush green landscapes, imposing rocks and cool springs. The course is of moderate difficulty, which makes it suitable for both experienced hikers and those who want to enjoy a more relaxed hiking experience in nature.
Along the route, visitors will encounter lush vegetation of pines, cypresses, oleanders and plane trees, creating a natural refuge of coolness, even during the hottest summer months. The area is also a refuge for many species of birds and wildlife, including the famous kri-kri that lives in the White Mountains.
One of the most characteristic features of the gorge are the impressive rock formations that rise imposingly to the right and left of the route, creating a dramatic and exciting atmosphere. In some places, the rocks narrow considerably, intensifying the sense of exploration and contact with wildlife.
At the end of the route, the gorge ends at the village of Sougia, a seaside destination known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches. After the hike, visitors can cool off in the crystal clear waters of South Crete or enjoy an authentic Cretan meal in one of the local taverns.
For a safe and enjoyable hike, be sure to wear comfortable and durable hiking shoes, carry enough water and light snacks. A hat and sunscreen are essential for protection from the sun, especially in the summer months. If you plan to relax at the end of your hike in Sougia, don't forget to bring a swimsuit and towel for a refreshing dip in the sea.
The Gorge of Agia Irini offers an authentic experience of contact with the Cretan nature, without the big tourist traffic that characterizes other well-known gorges of the island.
