A s one walks along the harbour, one encounters a harmonious combination of Venetian, Ottoman and neoclassical architecture, which bears witness to the successive phases of Rethymno's history. The old warehouses, the picturesque buildings with wooden balconies and coloured windows create an atmosphere of a different era.
The most characteristic feature of the port is the impressive Venetian lighthouse, which dominates the edge of the breakwater. The lighthouse, which dates back to the 17th century, is a trademark of the old harbour and offers a magnificent view, especially at sunset, when the colours of the sky are reflected in the calm waters.
The port, although small, was an important commercial hub during the Venetian period, with ships carrying goods such as oil, wine and grain to and from Crete. However, due to its small capacity, its commercial activity gradually declined and today it is mainly used for tourist purposes and fishing boats.
Around the harbour, traditional tavernas and cafes are spread around the port, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy a meal or a drink against the backdrop of the endless blue Aegean Sea. The view of the illuminated buildings at night, combined with the sound of the waves gently breaking on the waterfront, creates an idyllic atmosphere that enchants every visitor.
The area of the old harbour is connected to the Old Town of Rethymno, offering visitors the opportunity to get lost in the narrow streets with the bougainvillea, visit the historical monuments and discover small shops with local products and handmade souvenirs.
